A view of the Salem Avenue side of the former N. W. Pugh Department Retailer (at 35 Campbell Avenue) in Roanoke, Virginia. The greenish columnar shape is an Art Deco iron drain spout at the rear of the constructing. The structure was rebuilt in Art Deco style in 1931 following a fire destroyed the early 1900s building it was then remodeled in 1965. Apparently the structure has undergone one more transformation, revealing the original block-extended Art Deco façade. I’ve vague memories of this place from my 1940s childhood. The developing is included as part of the Roanoke Downtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places—listed on September 14, 2002 with ID#02000978
