  1. do you have to look for only kitchen remodeling contractor, or a general contractor will do the job, as well..?

  2. Garbage cans in cabinets is a waste of space and a guaranteed mess. Keep a separate container outside the cabinets, empty it regularly and replace it when it is unmanageable.

  3. Biggest mistake is buying any of the cupboard handles shown or those hideous gold taps.
They are a crime against humanity!

"Design Professionals" want to be paid for their information. I assume you are a "Design Professional"?

  5. really useful  video on how to start your kitchen remodeling project, and how to find kitchen remodeling contractor.

  6. ItsPARISbabii

How can she say that; she wished she woulda known in greater detail the dimensions so she wouldn’t bump the appliances into things…layout is one of the first steps in a remodel. I never did a remodel in my life and I know that. Who did her kitchen?? They should be blacklisted. Tisk tisk

  7. Case San Jose

This is a great introductory video for anyone thinking about remodeling their kitchen! We agree about the dimensions of the kitchen island. The homeowner should really think about how they want to use the kitchen before making any major decisions!

  8. David Larkin

Planning ahead is important during renovation. It’s such a hassle to finish a project only to realize that you missed something. Also watch out for those finishing details, they might be minor, but they make a world of difference.

  9. debbiewasshername

we had some people come in ( yes licensed), and are still in court over how they ruined our kitchen.
Its painful financially but at this point its the principle and looks like we will win and at least get our attorney fees back…hopefully in 2015

  10. See…..right there….thats why I’m such a successful high end cabinetmaker….I ONLY charge more for changes AFTER the cabinet has been built. I meet my clients on-site, and i show up with story sticks to give them a better idea of the finished product (especially the overall size/location of the appliances and larger cabinets….such as pantries)..(your client does not have the same visualization skills that you have when it comes to the finished product)…..Rough Story Sticks Help Them GREATLY when on site, I invite my clients into my shop during the process, and encourage changes before its too late….trust me you will have SUPER happy clients if you go the extra mile in the planning stages

bathroom vanity ckitchen nations mi. I have a lot more to do it for

  13. Lorraine Fletcher Jarron

the island has to be in relationship to the size of the kitchen, not a useless measurement. A size ratio, like how much room between other cupboards, minimum and maximum, door opening of appliances etc.

  14. Jeff Wiblitzhouser

Careful planning, using a #LicensedContractor, counting the time and costs before starting all can make a world of difference in your #KitchenRemodeling efforts.

  15. Change of mind is a right.. contractors are the problem.. get a craftsman that builds what you want ..

  16. Joshua Colantuono

So since I have a small home and don’t have space for all you said I shouldn’t bother?

  17. So who decided their island was too long after they got it built? I doubt that ever really happened. For most people, the bigger the better and 10 feet is more like a minimum than a maximum.

  18. Homepros NYC

LMAO, they go to a hardware store to ask the pros, what pros at a hardware store they ask; stock boy, key maker, sales person or cashier. Hey CR most contractors don’t shop at hardware stores.

  20. I wish I knew that if you are buying and installing luxury appliances use an electrician and plumber who have actually prepped a kitchen for those appliances.    The company we purchased from technically installed the appliances but they had to come back repeatedly for plumbing and electrical errors.  Luxury appliances like Sub-Zero don’t have the water valve and electrical in the same spot as other fridges.   My electrician "assumed" my gas range only needed 110 (didn’t even think about it being duel fuel)and the appliances were on site.  All he had to do what take a short walk to the garage to check it out.  The plumber even fibbed and said, "None of the Sub-zeros I worked on in the past had the water intake near the floor but they have been made that way for 4 decades.  I wish I had hired a certified installer to come mark the kitchen with a sharpie for where the electrical and what type of electrical and the same thing for plumbing (types of valves metric or standard) etc.   That would have saved me so much time and aggravation.

  21. Harold Dietrich

CR got it all wrong! Instead of a hardware store they should have interviewed design professionals. Instead of saying what dimensions an island should be they should have asked a design professional. Instead of giving space planning do’s and don’ts, they should have talked to design professionals. Instead of touting hoods they should have talked to design professionals. In short, CR should stick to appliance, car, etc. reviews and leave design advice to the professionals.

  22. ZLINE Kitchen

Great informational video! There’s some great advise here, when it comes to remodeling a kitchen. For those who don’t know where to find a good contractor, visit Home Advisor. We always refer to them for finding a quality, local contractor/handyman.

  23. Nothing I haven’t thought of. This is just common sense. Why would you even remodel a kitchen without the dimensions in mind?

  24. Did anyone else notice when they were interviewing people the people were reading from a script. You can see their eyes tracking back and fourth. That’s something most people do not do when they are giving their honest opinion, looks kind of set up to me.

  25. TheOpelkoenjas

One more advice: never trust ratings and reliability of a contractor on the internet.Trust me, I’m giving you good advice.
